Take Care of Your Clothes by Cleaning It Right

Cleaning clothes is very important not only to maintain a nice appearance but also to extend the life of your garment as much as possible. Shirts are easy to wash because you just have to separate colored ones with the white ones. For button-down shirts, you should first unfasten all the buttons even the small ones at the collar before washing or else the spin in the machine and the weight of other clothes may damage the buttonholes. Clean them thoroughly every time you wash them especially those with collars because stains caused by body oils and perspiration can be hard to eliminate. For stains, apply a stain remover or spot-clean with a mixture of water and liquid detergent by pouring it over the stain and rubbing it using a soft toothbrush. It’s very important to thoroughly clean shirts that are permanently pressed and other clothing treated with resins in order to maintain their shape since this type of material are more likely to hold soiling.

Accessories such as hats and gloves should be hand-washed especially if they are knitted. Structured hats such as baseball caps should be spot-cleaned as they can become deformed. You can hand wash gloves having tiny sections of leather if the leather is the same color as the knit. When drying, insert the handle of a wooden spoon in one finger and place the spoon end in a vase. This can help glove maintain its shape while drying.

Coats made of polyester or those down coats can be washed in front-loading machines using a mild powder detergent and warm water on the gentle cycle. You can also opt for the dry cleaner as some machines have agitators that can constrict and displace down filling and stop pieces from moving about freely. Smaller items such as children’s coats (whether filled with down or polyester) can be cleaned in any washing machine using the gentle cycle. Afterwards, tumble dry on low. You can place clean, dry towels in the dryer to help absorb excess moisture and hasten drying of the coats.
