Very few clothing items that you can wear can give you an instant impression of being old, traditional, and brainy. Even fewer clothing items can suggest that you are Republican (this does not suggest that being Republican is synonymous as being brainy--not at all). But the bow tie does that, plus a bit more.
In a survey of 900 people regarding bow ties, respondents were shown faceless images of a man who was wearing a ties on top of their shirts and were then asked about what they think about the man's background and character. There was also an image of the same man wearing a tie and none at all. In summary, more respondents believed that the man wearing a bow tie is old and scholarly, as compared to the man wearing a neck tie and to the man who is not wearing a tie at all. Perhaps not surprisingly, majority of the respondents also thought that the man wearing a bow tie was dull, whereas the man who wore a necktie was a good dresser. The man wearing a bow tie was also less liked than the man wearing a neck tie and the man with no tie. Personally, wearing a bow tie reminds me of the immigrants to America during the last century. They're pretty much composed of blue-collar workers then. It's a pretty mundane survey, but it actually shows you a lot of information regarding our culture and how we perceive people wearing a bow tie in general. It's a time when people are actually very casual with their clothing (thank goodness!) but a lot of people still prefer to wear their favorite bow tie to work or to anywhere. Can we justify these stereotypical images and attribute them to the people wearing the bow ties? Of course wearing a bow tie to a formal occasion is a different matter altogether, as wearing bow ties to these kinds of events are pretty much standard, so long as you don't look like any of the waiters.
