In developing countries, particularly China, ripoffs of premium clothing brands are openly sold in the markets, even with authorities around. Selling ripoffs is already a custom in these areas, quite contrary to the strict IPR regulation in the developed world.
A few months back, one of my aunts tagged me along in one of these hubs. There you can see racks upon racks of fake clothing and bags. I, for one, have never seen that much fake Louis Vuittons stacked together in one case. But you can bet that they were dirt cheap compared to their original counterparts. That is one idea that I really don't get. Obviously these ripoffs won't proliferate without market patronage. Why would the people want to purchase ripoff goods? Why would anyone damage his/her integrity by purchasing products that violate someone else's business? Just take a look at this article and you'll see at least 20 Chinese brands that look very similar to other Western businesses. One popular reason is that ripoffs are cheap. They are affordable and they can be easily purchased by the masses. But why? It seems that a lot of people feel rich themselves whenever they wear clothing that feature signature brands--even if they really can't afford these brands so they settle for something ripoff. That's bizarre reasoning if you ask me. If you equate your self-worth with the brand of the clothes that you wear, then you got some self-esteem issues right there. I'm no fan of branded clothing. I'd definitely wear a brandless item than a ripoff. The sad part is that I don't think these ripoffs won't go away anytime soon. These ripoffs are nowhere near the top of these governments' agenda, which is something reasonable, I guess. Underground markets are pretty large in developing nations. But China, which is bound to be the world's largest economy by 2050, should do something in order to curb its ripoff production. You can talk about... Why Would People Buy Ripoff Goods?
