Italian fashion brands, especially those that are considered luxury brands, never fail to attract the attention of those in the lower classes of this society. But they don't have the money--just the imagination--to wear clothing and accessories that bear the logos of these highly esteemed brands.
And when there's the demand for such goods, you can bet that there are cheap alternatives, which are not exactly something you will call as illegal. These cheap knockoffs are pretty common especially in the so-called third world nations, where knock offs are openly sold in the market. But while these Italian luxury brands will have a hard time dealing with retail shops in third world nations, they definitely won't allow to lose its income in stores in the more affluent nations, such as the US. Just recently, Italian luxury brand Versace won a record compensation of US$20 million after filing a case against US retail stores for selling counterfeit products. This amount is one of the highest ever awarded by a US court for a case filed to protect a trademark. The lawsuit, which involved 70 retail stores in Southern California and Arizona, required about 110 people to be part of the case, spanning 7 years of trials and continuous investigation. Despite the long time it required to finish the case, the Versace Group was happy with the result, saying that this historic ruling will have a positive effect not only for Versace, but for a lot of European fashion houses. Just this March, luxury house Fendi also won a counterfeit lawsuit in a Manhattan court. Last 2009 alone, Versace had revenues amounting to $359.6 million. Versace is well-known for producing gowns worn by Hollywood stars like Drew Barrymore and Penelope Cruz. Personally, I don't see the point of knock-offs. Why would you want to give the people the impression that you're wearing a luxury brand when you actually don't have the money to back it up. I would really rather wear an unbranded shirt than a counterfeit brand. You can talk about...
