I remember stories of my aunt wherein she would always ask one of her sisters to sew clothes for her. She would purchase the fabric from the market, and her sister who sews clothes as a profession creates the goods for her for free. It seemed then that almost all of my aunt's clothing were made from scratch instead of having them purchased as already made. It probably made sense then, but does it make sense now?
People say that sewing your own clothes can save you a lot of money that you would otherwise use to purchase ready-made outfits. However, not all tales are the same and there are still a lot of factors that you have to look into before declaring something as economical for you. For example, you have to look at the types of clothes that you purchase prior to the decision to sew your own clothes. If you are purchasing mostly branded items, then you are definitely going to save a lot of cash by purchasing the fabric and creating the clothes out of them. Otherwise, you will have to compare prices more carefully and use the law of averages in order to come up with a price. Among the items that you have to consider when accounting the cost of a sewn shirt are the fabric, the needles, the threads, and the buttons. Put them together and average in order to have a figure. But even if the price of a freshly made shirt is expensive (factory-made clothing benefits from economies of scale), a lot of people still prefer to sew their own because of quality. Cheap clothes tend to get easily torn or damaged because of the poor stitches. When you sew your own clothes, you have complete control on anything and everything related to your creations. In order to save even more money on your raw material, take note of those shops that sell discounted fabrics, buttons, and other raw materials.They are dime a dozen and you can create very cheap clothing only for a few dollars if you know where to look.
