The 1980s. It was a fashion milestone, one of those decades that will be forever remembered. It was during this time when women realized that they actually had more choices than what is available before, with all the fashion trends running parallel to each other. It was also during this decade when the concept of power dressing is conceived.
Power dressing, as it name implies, is a type of fashion trend that supposedly gave power to the wearer of that outfit. With one look, people are already supposed to know that you are confident with yourself, your position, and that you are a man or woman of importance. During the 80s, this means wearing suits that had wide shoulder pads, and colors than can sometimes be surprising to the eye, giving that instantaneous effect of putting you below the status of the wearer. But while power dressing in the past is sometimes considered today to be too dull for a woman, power dressing has taken on a slightly different meaning today, as it embraced more choices and more color for the empowered person. Ditch the boring suits and pearl necklaces and go for something more chic, something more colorful, and something that is a bit more like you. Depending on the policies of the company where you are working, you can normally choose between two types of business attire. First is the business formal attire (the more conservative version), while the other one is business casual. Business formal attire consists of your typical business suits. Black, beige, gray, and brown are the preferred colors, while white and pastel colors are starting to get appreciated. For business casual, things are a bit relaxed. There's no need for a suit, although a blouse or a good polo shirt should be ideal. Jackets, sweaters, and silk prints are generally accepted, although leather footwear for men and women are still required.
