Sure you know how to use the machine for washing your clothes. Or you may also be hand-washing your delicates. But what if you have a piece of clothing that is special and you wouldn’t know if either machine-wash or hand-wash will damage it? If you can read the label of the clothing then good for you as it can guide you on how to wash your garment correctly. But what if the label has faded or was cut? When in doubt, take it to the dry cleaners. Not sure if you can dry clean your wardrobe? Read on to know the answer. First things first, make sure you read the label carefully. Most manufacturers are required to list at least one way to clean an article of clothing. Read the label carefully and follow it. Don’t forget to consider the fabric. Unless the label suggests other means of cleaning, take fabrics such as silk, acetate, velvet, and wool to the dry cleaner. Cotton, linen, cashmere, polyester, and nylon can be cleaned at home. Make sure you also test the detailing. Care instructions are usually for the fabric only and not the accents. Before you wash and clean anything with beading, sequins, and similar items, make sure they are sewn on (look for stitches and not glue) and colorfast. How to check for colorfastness? Quickly pat a wet cotton swab over each type of accent to see if any dye comes off. If you’ve checked thoroughly and are sure that you can clean the fabrics at home, follow these tips on how to do them properly. Machine-wash the garment if you’re really sure that it is okay. Bear in mind to always check first before washing. Or you can turn the item inside out, place it in a mesh bag, and run a short, delicate cycle. In some cases, you can hand wash the fabric. Use cold water to prevent shrinking and bleeding, and a mild detergent. Keep in mind to always skip the dryer. Too much heat damages the accents and the fibers. As a substitute, remove excess water gently (no twisting) and put down the garment to dry on a white towel in order to prevent discoloring. You can also air-dry the garment on top of a working dryer. The moderate heat given off by the machine will accelerate the process. You can talk about... Is Dry Cleaning Needed?
