As a personal rule, I make sure that all formal clothing and other garment pieces that are difficult to maintain are dry cleaned instead of ordinary washing at home. This is especially the case for my formal clothes because washing in an ordinary washing machine can sometimes damage the quality of my clothes.
This is a wrong way of thinking because it isn't that known to many that dry cleaning can also permanently damage your clothes. These are chemicals that we are talking about, so even though dry cleaning can preserve the quality of your clothes upon touching them, in the long run they are actually shortening the lifespan of your clothes. This begs the question, when are you supposed to dry wash? And which clothes are best fit for dry washing? As a general rule, almost all types of garments may be put in the dry wash moderately. Note that the keyword here is moderately as we are all permanently damaging our clothes every time we put them for them dry washing. Also note that some fabrics, while technically passable for dry cleaning, are especially delicate and prone to damage due to dry washing, so they are better put in the laundry instead. This includes your wool sweater, cotton dress shirts, and actually your suit--although suits may still be put in the dry wash as long as it is infrequent as possible. For suits, it can be something to the tune of only once per season. In the meantime, you can clean any dirty spots through the use of soap and mildly hot water. You can also choose to purchase a clothes steamer in order to take care of those fabric wrinkles. There you go. If there's any lesson to be had from this story, it's that nothing it is still best to wash your clothes in water unless it is explicitly specific in the label of your clothes that washing in water is not allowed. If you really can't help it, at least be wary of the people and shops you entrust with your clothes. Not all dry washers are made equal. You can talk about...
