Thank author of this post/comment

Unlike business majors, I was never taught to wear formal clothing for the large part of my life in college. That's why it's a bit surprising and new for me to wear a tie for some formal events. This time, it was for a graduation ball that I had to attend. Since it was a ball, it was imperative that I wore formal clothing, which was what I exactly did.

But there was a problem, and as I have said, it's that I have hardly worn a tie, thus prompting me to require the help of my mom when it comes to choosing the right color combination. I know a bit about choosing the right tie, but I'm not confident with my judgment when it comes to this thing.

As a rule of thumb, it is recommended to choose a dark tie for a light-colored shirt, and a light-colored tie for a dark shirt. When choosing a tie remember that this should be the last article that you need to decide on. Your choice of shirt should not depend on the tie. Instead, the choice of the tie should depend on the shirt.

The same rule should apply to the pattern. A solid shirt should come with a patterned tie, and a patterned shirt should come with a solid tie. Also note that stripes give you an illusion of becoming taller. Horizontal ties supposedly make you look wider, but I seriously haven't seen a tie with that kind of pattern.

After you have mastered the conventional rules of matching ties, then that's probably the time that you can mix and match. I've seen shirt-and-tie combinations that featured homogenous colors, that is, the color of the shirt actually matched with the tie. This is a good fashion statement, in my opinion, but it should be matched with great self-confidence. Defying fashion conventions have always had that kind of requirement.
