In the country where I live, formal business suits are not actually a norm because it is too hot to where these types of clothing to work. Whenever I ask my friends from other companies what their dress code is, they only tell me one thing: business casual. Coincidentally, this is the same dress code requirement we are asked to wear. But what exactly is it? How can an attire be business-friendly and casual at once?
A business casual dress code arose from the need to make workers in the office as comfortable as possible without sacrificing the professional appeal that they want to give to clients. A business casual dress code tries to be the halfway point between these two requirements, the sweet spot where you can get the best of both worlds. There is no denying that it can be really uncomfortable in a full-blown business suit, but we don't really want to turn off our clients either. Business casual is still casual in the sense that you can still wear this type of clothing when you are out and having fun, but not too casual that it is already inappropriate. This means that clothes you normally wear to the beach or to the gym are already out of the question. Clothes that reveal too much skin are also a no-no. For guys, slacks and shirts are the norm for business casual. By slacks, we mean those that are made from wool, flannel, and sometimes even capri. Jeans are not allowed, as well as spandex (who wears spandex to work?!?!?!). Long-sleeved shirts are accepted and sometimes even short-sleeved ones. It is not necessary to wear a tie in business casual. For women, slacks and shirts are the norm as well. Simple dress shirts are also widely accepted. Blouses that have spaghetti-style straps or tubes are not accepted. Business casual footwear includes footwear include ordinary walking shoes, leather shoes, high-heeled stilettos, and flats. Sneakers are usually frowned upon. How can you wear sneakers with slacks anyway? On Fridays, businesses that require a business casual dress code usually allow employees to dress down and wear jeans and shirts.
