Consider this scenario. You walk into a clothing boutique and look around for some good new clothes to purchase. You see something that you really, really like. You hold it in your hands and you know that you like the texture of the fabric, the color, the stitches, and practically everything about that piece of clothing. A salesperson walks up to you with a smile in his/her face, thinking that he/she is about to make a sale. You are willing to purchase it--until you check the price tag and see that the item is very much out of your budget.
You may have a credit card with you, but you know that you are not willing topay that much for just one item of clothing. The awful thing about the situation is that you have a salesperson looking at you, waiting for your next move. What should you do? Do you still purchase it out of embarrassment? Do you try to get additional stocks and cite imperfections so that you have an excuse for not purchasing? Or do you simply put the item down and accept that you cannot afford it? The answer would obviously depend on your background and the culture that you come from. If you live in an impoverished country, people will most likely just return the item to the rack. Everybody knows that life is difficult and money is very important. There is nothing to get embarrased about. Others, however, tend to make excuses for themselves because they don't want to look poor. Perhaps it is these people who lack that self-confidence. What you really do to deal with the aforementioned situation is none of other people's business, but a word from the wise would be to avoid continuing with the purchase if you really cannot afford it. There should be nothing wrong with putting down your ego for a little bit instead of forever worrying about your credit card bills. You can talk about...
